Keeping La Cornue Brass and Nickel Bright in Houston Humidity

Humid Gulf Coast air speeds tarnish on brass and dulls nickel. A short routine keeps La Cornue trim looking right without damaging it.

Brass and nickel trim reacts with moisture, sulfur, and skin oils. In a humid Houston kitchen that reaction is faster, so trim can darken within weeks if it is never touched.

A gentle weekly routine

  • Wipe trim with a dry or barely damp microfiber cloth.
  • Dry fingerprints immediately, since skin oil leaves marks that darken.
  • Keep spray cleaners away from the trim, because mist drifts onto metal.

When tarnish has formed

Use a polish made for the specific finish, applied with a soft cloth in small sections and buffed dry. Do not use a brass polish on nickel, and test on a hidden spot first. A lacquered finish and a raw finish need different care, so confirm which you have before polishing.

What to leave alone

Never polish a hot surface, and keep polish out of burner ports, control stems, and the gaps around knobs. Residue there can burn off with an odor or gum up a moving part. Heavy pitting or green corrosion under the finish is a sign of long moisture exposure, not something polish will reverse.

Protecting trim during cooking

Steam and grease vapor settle on metal while you cook, so a quick wipe after the range cools does more than a monthly polish. Using the hood during cooking pulls much of that moisture away from the trim. Keep wet dish towels off the range front, where they hold damp against the metal.

Houston kitchens near the coast or a pool deal with extra salt or chlorine in the air, which speeds up dulling. If that is your situation, wipe the trim more often than the weekly routine suggests.

If a knob has started to bind where polish or moisture reached it, we can look at the valve beneath. Visit our range repair page or the Houston service area list to book.
