Closing Up a La Cornue Range Before a Long Summer Trip

A kitchen left closed in Houston's heat and damp for weeks can invite rust and pests. A short checklist protects the range.

A range left unused through a hot, humid month can start to show surface rust, stale odors, and sticky valves. A few minutes before you leave prevents most of it.

Before you go

  • Clean the cooktop and oven fully so no grease or crumbs attract pests.
  • Leave the oven door shut so dust and insects stay out.
  • Turn off the gas at the shutoff valve if you will be away more than a week or two.
  • Keep the air conditioner at a steady, moderate setting to hold humidity down.
  • Ask a neighbor to look in if you will be gone for a long stretch.

When you return

Open windows briefly, check for any gas smell, and restore gas before lighting anything. Light each burner one at a time. Idle valves can feel stiff for the first few turns, which is normal.

What to watch

If a knob stays hard to turn after a few uses, or a burner keeps failing to catch, moisture or residue may have reached the valve. Avoid forcing it, since a damaged stem is more expensive than a cleaned one.

Protecting the burners while closed

Cover the cooktop with a clean, dry cloth rather than plastic, which traps moisture against the metal. Put a small desiccant pack where it cannot touch food, and remove grates and caps only if you can reinstall them correctly. A tidy, dry range comes back to use with far fewer surprises.

Bring in plants or food that could spoil, but leave the range sealed and dry. A visit when you return costs less than repairing a unit that sat in damp air all summer.

For a post-vacation check, we test ignition and look at each valve. See range repair and the areas we serve.

Tell us the model and the code. We will bring the part.
