Houston Humidity and Your La Cornue Range: Ignition and Rust Basics

Months of damp air can slow ignition and start rust on a La Cornue range. Here is what moisture does and how to keep ahead of it.

Houston’s humidity is a daily condition, not a seasonal one, and a range sits in it all year. Moisture mostly affects ignition parts and bare metal.

Ignition

Electrodes and the burner base need to be dry to spark cleanly. After a spill or mopping near the cooktop, damp electrodes can click without lighting or click long after the flame starts. Letting the area dry, then lifting and reseating the cap, usually restores normal behavior.

Rust and corrosion

  • Surface rust on cast iron grates and plates responds to a light oil wipe.
  • Rust on screws, brackets, or the gas train deserves a closer look.
  • Rust bleeding from enamel chips is a sign moisture reached the steel beneath.

Habits that help

Run the hood during and after cooking to remove steam, keep the kitchen air conditioned, and wipe condensation from the cooktop surface. In a closet-like pantry beside the range, avoid storing damp towels. These steps cost nothing and slow the effects of damp air considerably.

A drying routine that works

After steam-heavy cooking or a mopped floor, leave the hood on for several more minutes and keep the room ventilated. Use a dry cloth on the cooktop and around the knobs. If a burner clicks without lighting, wait until the base is dry before trying again, rather than repeating the spark many times.

Gas ranges also give off moisture as they burn, which is another reason to run the hood. In summer, the air conditioner removes much of that humidity if the house is closed up properly.

If ignition has become unreliable, we dry-test and inspect the burner base, electrodes, and spark module together. Learn more on our range repair page or in our Houston coverage area.
