Unlike the gas models, a La Cornue induction hob can show a short letter or symbol, such as U, H, E, F, L, or P. The exact meaning depends on your model, so treat any letter as a pointer, not a diagnosis.
Checks before anything else
- Switch the hob off at the control, wait a minute, and turn it back on.
- Remove the pan and check that it is flat, magnetic, and sized to the zone.
- Wipe the surface dry, because a wet or crumb-covered area can confuse touch controls.
- Make sure nothing is resting on the controls.
Why the same letter can mean different things
A symbol can come from the pan, the cooling fan, a hot surface, or the electronics, and some letters show up in more than one situation. That is why we never name a failed part from a letter alone. Your user manual lists meanings for your model, and we read the same symbol against actual behavior.
What to note for the visit
Write down the letter, which zone it appeared on, what pan you used, and whether it returns after a restart. If the hob lost power after a storm, mention that too. A pattern across several zones suggests the supply or the electronics, while one zone suggests the zone itself.
Why it helps to keep the manual handy
The symbol table, zone layout, and care notes for your induction hob live in the user manual, and different models vary. Keep a copy in a drawer or a photo on your phone. If you no longer have it, tell us the model name and number on the data plate and we will work from that.
Induction hobs also protect themselves from heat, so a letter can appear after long boiling or empty pans. Letting the hob rest for a few minutes often clears a temperature-related warning.
With the symbol and the pattern in hand, we test the zone and the supply before ordering anything. See cooktop repair and the Houston areas we visit.
