La Cornue Grand Palais 180 Gas Range Repair

La Cornue range

Most common issues on this model

  1. Flame at each burner: lighting, ring evenness and a steady blue color
  2. French top heat from the middle out to the rim
  3. Ignition and flame-safety device on the lava-rock grill, or element heat on the teppanyaki
  4. Left and right oven temperatures against their own thermostat settings

Of all the La Cornue ranges, the Grand Palais 180 takes the most counter space: two full-size vaulted ovens side by side under a 180 cm gas hob. The French top sits in the middle of the cooking surface, and the burner layout around it depends on the installed hob code. That last position can hold a power burner, extra burners, a grill on lava rock or an electric teppanyaki, so the first job on any visit is to see which one you have.

Nothing on this range talks back. It has knobs, no display and no codes, so we judge by what we can see and measure. We light every burner and look at the flame, put a gauge on the gas line, and look closely at the ignition and flame-safety device wherever a burner lights and then dies. The French top is checked for a cold rim, and each oven is compared against a thermometer, left side and right side separately.

The label gives the exact model and serial, and we read it before any part is ordered. You see a written price first.

Only one burner will not light. Is the gas supply the cause?

Seldom, if its neighbor lights normally. We look at that burner's ignition, its ports for blockage and the gas flow to that single position before suspecting anything upstream.

The French top is hot in the middle but cool at the rim. Normal?

Some falloff is how a French top works, but a rim that stays cool at full heat points to flame size or burner position under the plate. We check both before anything else.

Why do my two ovens heat differently?

Each vaulted oven has its own heat source and thermostat. We measure both cavities with a thermometer against their dial settings, then test the heat source and thermostat of the one that is off.
