What U means
Two ordinary functions of a La Cornue induction hob share the one symbol U, and neither is an error. One is the pan detector, shown when a zone is switched on with no pan on it, or with a pan the induction zone cannot use. The other is the Keep Warm setting, shown when the control knob is turned just past zero. In both cases the hob is working as designed.
Common causes of U
- No pan on the zone, or a pan that is too small, off-center or not suited to induction
- The knob sitting at the Keep Warm position on purpose
- A pan detector that stays on even though a compatible, centered pan is present
1. Check which zone shows U and whether you meant to select Keep Warm there. 2. If it is the pan detector, place a flat-bottomed, induction-compatible pan of adequate size, centered on the zone. 3. Wait for the hob to detect the pan; the symbol clears once it does. 4. If U stays after that, try the same pan on another zone.
- If the symbol stays with a suitable pan, the question is whether the zone's pan detection works, which we test directly.
- We also check that the knob is reading its position properly, since a knob slightly past zero looks like Keep Warm.
- We give a written price before any work.
Is U an error?
No. It is either the pan detector, meaning the zone sees no usable pan, or the Keep Warm setting. Neither is a failure. The hob is working as designed.
What kind of pan clears the pan detector?
A flat-bottomed pan that is induction-compatible, of adequate diameter and centered on the zone. Once the hob detects it, the symbol clears. A pan that is warped, too small or off-center may keep U showing.
I did not select Keep Warm. Why does U show?
Keep Warm sits just past zero on the knob, so a knob left slightly turned shows U. Turn the knob fully to zero and see whether it clears. If it keeps appearing alone, we test the knob.
Still unsure about U?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
