What L means
On La Cornue ranges and cooktops fitted with an induction hob, the symbol L is not an error. It is the child lock indicator, showing that the hob has been secured against use on purpose. L appears after both control knobs are turned counter-clockwise together and held there for at least four seconds. While the lock is on, the hob will not respond to its knobs.
Common causes of L
- Child lock switched on by turning both knobs counter-clockwise together for four seconds or more
- Knobs bumped or turned together by accident while cleaning
- A lock that will not clear, or engages on its own, which would point to the knob switches
1. Check that the symbol is L and that no other symbol is showing. 2. Rotate both knobs counter-clockwise once more and hold them there until L goes out. 3. Try one zone to confirm the hob now responds. 4. If L will not clear, or comes on by itself without both knobs being turned together, call us.
- A lock that engages without both knobs being turned together points to the knob switches, not to the lock function.
- A lock that will not clear after the knob step is also a switch question, which we test directly.
- We give a written price before any work.

Is L a sign that my hob has failed?
No. L means the child lock is on, which only happens when both knobs are turned counter-clockwise together for at least four seconds. It is a function, not a failure.
How do I turn the child lock off?
Rotate both knobs counter-clockwise once more until L goes out. Then try a zone to confirm the hob responds. If the lock stays on after that, the knob switches may be the issue.
The lock keeps coming on by itself. What does that mean?
Normally it takes both knobs turned together for four seconds. If it engages without that, the knob switches are the likely reason, so we test them rather than the lock function itself.
Still unsure about L?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
